Ecclesiastes

Desire & Habel | 1

Preacher: Kim Beales

Date: 12th February 2023

Passage: Ecclesiastes 1 & 2, (cf. Genesis 2).

Blurb: This talk is an introduction to Ecclesiastes and the Hebrew word habel, which is translated mist, vapour, futility and is likened to a chasing after the wind. The teacher in Ecclesiastes discovers that all his desires and pursuits are habel and that whatever we pursue in life, there’s an inescapable futility in it, ultimately stamped in death itself. How then do we desire well in a world which “everything is habel”? Using Ecclesiastes as a launch pad, and then interacting with Genesis 2, Kim investigates the theme of human desire.

Preacher: Kim Beales

Date: 19th February 2023

Passage: Ecclesiastes 3:1-22

Blurb: The teacher in Ecclesiastes says, “God has set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” The crisis underlying the book of Ecclesiastes is that we have a sense of eternity while knowing we are mortal. Believers and unbelievers alike experience this. Come join us as we process time, work, mortality, and the hope that we have in Jesus.

Preacher: Kim Beales

Date: 26th February 2023

Passage: Ecclesiastes 9:1-18

Blurb: Surely being wise is one of the great things we could ever be. Yet, in this talk we discover that even wisdom is “habel”. The teacher in Ecclesiastes says whether you’re wise or foolish, the same fate awaits us all. Yet wisdom is better than foolishness. Come join us as we explore the benefits and limits of wisdom as presented in the book of Ecclesiastes, and as interpreted through the message of Jesus.
